What is
the Persian Connection?

My name is Sophia Saleh, and I am the founder of The Persian Connection, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring modern-day Iran through the lens of Persian literature. By examining the stories, themes, and values found in Persian literary works, The Persian Connection seeks to deepen understanding of Iranian history, culture, and identity. The project includes a podcast series analyzing renowned works of Persian literature, a children's novel, a blog featuring Persian cultural traditions and language-learning resources, and additional educational content designed to make Persian culture more accessible to a global audience.

As an Iranian American whose family fled Iran during the Islamic Revolution, I grew up speaking Farsi and embracing Persian culture from afar. My fascination with Persian literature began when I was ten years old, after my Mamanjoon and Babajoon gave me an illustrated edition of the Shahnameh. I was immediately captivated by its unforgettable heroes and villains, whose stories blend mythology with profound reflections on courage, justice, love, and the human condition.

As I continued studying the Shahnameh and the works of other great Persian poets and authors, I discovered that Persian literature is more than a collection of timeless stories—it is a window into the values, history, and resilience of the Iranian people. I was especially inspired by how the masterpieces of Persian literature demonstrate that Persian civilization, with more than 2,500 years of history,  shaped literature, philosophy, and culture around the world. Through The Persian Connection, I hope to share that legacy and show how understanding Persian literature offers a deeper understanding of Iran itself.
